Question by Laurenn <3: I need help with saving money!!?
I need some tips on saving my money. I’m 18 and I work at the grocery store and I’m planning on buying a macbook. I pay my cell phone bill and moms which is almost $ 200.00 because we both have iPhones and I doubt either one of us will get something cheaper haha. I don’t make alot so it’s going to take a long time for me to save up.
I want to buy a refurbished macbook for now which is 750-1,000 for college this year since it is a little cheaper than buying brand new.
Anyway, right now I have some SERIOUS issues with saving money. I always have to spend it on useless things and at the rate I’m going I’ll never save up enough.
Can anyone give me advice on saving my money to get my macbook? Should I leave the money on my credit card? or take it out and put it in an envelope?

Open a savings account and deposit a fixed amount every payday. Then forget about it, spending wise, think of it as if you have paid on lay away for the Mac. It’s tempting initially but you will soon get used of it.
The thing you need to remember is that there is no “trick” or “secret” to saving money. You just have to put the money somewhere where you won’t have immediate access to it, whether that’s a savings account without a debit card, or cash stashed somewhere (but don’t forget where you hid it!), whatever will work for you. Remember that “borrowing” from this money for CDs, fast food, etc. is only stealing from yourself, and putting that macbook further and further away.
With that in mind, a good starting strategy is to set aside 10 or 15 dollars from your next check. You’ll never even miss it, right? Do 25 the next week – not a big increase at all. Up it to 35, then 50, etc, until you reach a point where you are setting aside basically as much as you can but still not be a miserable slave that doesn’t get to spend any money for fun.
You’re young, you should be using at least some of your money for fun with your friends, get take-out every once in a while, etc, but don’t let these expenses take away from your savings or your goals. Its like being on a diet- if you splurge and eat a cupcake, you can’t just call off the diet and eat 10 more. If you spend a bit more than you should, try harder to set aside that much more the next week.
Good luck, and keep at it!
